What is the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards?

In 1987 the National Board was created as a nonprofit, nonpartisan, nongovernmental organization with the following mission:

J To establish high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do.

J To develop and operate a national voluntary system to assess and certify teachers who meet these standards.

J To advance related education reforms for the purpose of improving student learning in American schools.

"The bottom line is that there is just no way to create good schools without good teachers."

Jim Kelly, Past President, National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

Why Should I Support a Teacher Seeking National Board Certification?

J National Board Certification allows accomplished teachers to achieve professional growth where it really happens - in the classroom with their students.

J National Board Certification encourages teachers to undergo serious reflection and self-examination, as they gauge their skills and knowledge against objective, peer-developed, national standards in specific teaching areas.

J National Board Certification allows teachers to become leaders and mentors within the school building.

J Good Teachers are the cornerstone of good schools.  National Board Certified Teachers have achieved the highest standards in the profession which positively impacts student learning.
What is the National Board Certification Process?

National Board Certification is an opportunity for an accomplished teacher to demonstrate teaching practice as measured against high and rigorous standards.

Candidates will participate in a two-part assessment based on standards in their field and reflecting various aspects of teaching.

The portfolio is completed in the teacher's own classroom and includes examples of student work, videotapes and other teaching artifacts.  The videos and student work are supported by commentaries on the goals and purposes of instruction, the effectiveness of the practice, reflections about what occurred, and the rationale of professional judgment.

The one-day assessment center exercises are designed to complement the portfolio and are organized around challenging teaching issues.  This aspect of the certification process is designed to provide an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities in situations across the age range and topics in the candidate's specific certification field.

The process takes the better part of a school year with over 250 hours spent on completing the portfolio.
